Artist Statement

FOREST PRAYER FLAGS investigates beauty, grief, interconnection & hope. The project began early in the pandemic, to look at sadness and hope, as part of the EXTRACTION art movement. While my artwork usually considers biophilic experiences, I turned to solastalgia—the heartache of habitat loss. I work onsite in burned and green forests with ink, paint, wildfire charcoal, and tree sap on Kozo paper; I also interview forest scientists. By allowing grief, I am able to rekindle joy and hope.
