Welcome Maddy Braybrooke: WSFF On Tour Coordinator

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I grew up in Hermosa Beach, CA and spent a ton of time jumping in the ocean, soaking up the SoCal sunshine, playing soccer and eating yummy food. Went to Dickinson College in PA and studied Sociology and Social Innovation. After graduating in 2019, I spent two years as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in Taiwan and then started working for a nonprofit supporting former foster youth in college with their basic needs resources and community events. I’ve been back and forth between LA and Nevada County for the last four years and finally moved to Nevada City in November and am so happy to be here!

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I love swimming in every body of water I can find, junk journaling, walking doggos, trying new recipes, hiking, camping, playing pickleball and hosting parties/movie nights/game nights.

What was your introduction to Wild & Scenic Film Festival?

I received tickets to WSFF as a holiday gift in 2025 and was super excited to attend because this festival combines so many things that I care about: storytelling, activism, adventure, animals, nature, and community. I left this festival feeling inspired, emotional, connected, and in awe – not many experiences elicit those feelings all at once and during every day you attend.

Why were you interested in this role with Wild & Scenic?

While I was walking home from the WSFF, I turned to my boyfriend and said, “Oh my god, I need to find a way to work for this film festival. I just have to. It’s everything I love wrapped up into one!” I love community organizing. I want to protect our amazing planet and everything on it. I’m drawn to kind, smart people doing impactful work. I savor any moment where a bunch of different people get to come together and combine their talents, interests, passions, and stories. WSFF is a special festival and there’s something for everyone in it, so when I saw that they were hiring a coordinator, I freaked out because I was manifesting an opportunity to get involved and now, I get to be a piece of all the awesomeness.

How do you expect your past experience will impact your new role with Wild & Scenic?

In the past I’ve been a teacher, community event planner, program coordinator, basic needs advisor, etc. I’ve worn many hats and I actually kinda enjoy being a bit of a swiss-army knife. I hope to bring my creative, happy, problem-solving, community-connecting skills to Wild & Scenic in whatever way I can.

Do you have a favorite WSFF experience?

WSFF hosted a dance event, and I got to attend with my partner and catch up with some new friends I’d met at the festival, but something that was super cool was the director of Bears in Hot Tubs was in attendance and I had just watched her film. So, I walked up to her and got to just chat with her about her film. We talked about life, careers, interests and animals and it was like we’d known each other forever. That’ll stick with me for a while because in my head she was like celebrity status and then talking to her she reminded me that she’s just trying to figure out life too.

What are one or two of your favorite films currently On Tour? Why?

Catching Pinecones blew me away. It hit all the emotions. If a film makes you happy cry, something good must be happening. You follow along pioneer rock climbers and cave explorers Jan and Herb Conn and this documentary helps you understand why they are considered legendary. This film reminds you to think about what truly is important in life and how to prioritize the things, particularly the simple things, that make you happy.
