On Tour Highlight

On August 30, 2024, join the Kentucky Conservation Committee for an evening of adventure and inspiration at their 10th Annual Wild & Scenic Film Festival On Tour Event at the Farish Theater at Central Library in Lexington, Kentucky. The evening will include door prizes and an auction. They are also offering a stay-at-home virtual option for their festival. Kentucky Conservation Committee promises a night of fun and friendship at their Wild & Scenic Film Festival On Tour Event. They always have a great turnout and try to keep the evening fun while still getting some serious environmental messages across.

WHO IS THE KENTUCKY CONSERVATION COMMITTEE?

The Kentucky Conservation Committee is one of the longest-running state-based conservation nonprofits, with a focus on providing a trusted voice in Kentucky’s Capitol and beyond. They effectively advocate for protection, restoration, and sustainable use of natural resources for the equitable benefit of all citizens in the Commonwealth.

KCC was formed in 1975 to provide a collaborative space for citizens and organizations to come together over shared goals on critical conservation policy issues and make change happen.

KCC’s vision is for Kentucky to be a responsible steward of the Commonwealth’s land, air, water and biota, and for Kentuckians to understand that the health of their families, communities and economy depends on the conservation of these resources. They work in a nonpartisan manner to ensure that democracy works for all citizens, particularly those who are not able to advocate for themselves.

WHAT DOES THE KENTUCKY CONSERVATION COMMITTEE DO?

KCC’s work focuses in four primary project areas: Clean Energy, Climate Action, Biodiversity and Land Conservation

The focus of their Clean and Sustainable Energy project is to educate the public at large, key decision-makers, and allies, and advocate for policies to build more support for clean energy including large and small scale solar, wind, and hydro, as well as energy storage for renewables. They also advocate for energy efficiency initiatives that reduce the impact of energy production and improve energy resiliency throughout the Commonwealth.

For their Climate Action project, new science shows natural climate solutions—based on the conservation, restoration, and management of forests, grasslands, and wetlands—can deliver up to 37% of the needed emission reductions by 2030.  Combined with wider adoption of renewable energy and other technologies, natural climate solutions are essential to keeping our climate safe. KCC works hard to advocate for these ideas.

Thier Biodiversity Education project consists of providing information to the public and build support for Kentucky’s rare and threatened plants and animals, as well as celebrating Kentucky’s unique biodiversity. Our work consists of public education events, research, and whitepapers designed to promote Kentucky’s unique range of plants, animals and biota and support efforts to conserve what is native and threatened.

KCC’s Land and Water Conservation project consists of providing support for land conservation initiatives such as conservation easements, increasing awareness of the importance of Kentucky’s lands and waters, and helping to coordinate important legislative and conservation efforts among outdoor recreation, tourism, agriculture, and environmental interests.

HOW THE WILD & SCENIC FILM FESTIVAL HELPS THEIR ORGANIZATION.

The advocacy work they do is pretty intensive…their members and supporters “go deep” into their advocacy work. What the Film Festival does is provide the inspiration to motivate their advocates, and it also provides the opportunity to open up KCC’s work to an entirely new audience as well.

Their favorite thing about putting on this event is the opportunity to introduce their work to new faces. People come to this event for a night of fun and adventure, but they may have come not knowing much about the Kentucky Conservation Committee and their work. This event is one of KCC’s favorite ways to get out in front of new folks, particularly a younger audience.
