It is thought that underneath the Antarctic ice sheet lies an entire system of over 300 lakes, only recently revealed through satellite imagery. With dual goals to discover new life forms and to understand the past climate history of the fragile West Antarctic Ice Sheet, an international team of scientists ventured to the virtually unknown interior of Antarctica to explore a subglacial lake they believed is buried 3,600 feet beneath the ice sheet. As they struggle against the ferocity of the ice and wind, they consider how our relationship with nature – and with one another — will impact humanity and the future of all life on our rapidly changing planet.
