For over 50 years, Tim Birkhead has devoted himself to studying seabirds on Skomer, a small island off the Welsh coast. As he grapples with their uncertain future, he also faces a deeper question: what will become of his life’s work? Tim, the subject of this short film, is one of Britain’s foremost ornithologists and a prominent voice in popular science communication.
After completing a PhD in Genetics at Cambridge University, I realized academia wasn’t my true path. Returning to my childhood dream of filmmaking, I began working on natural history and science documentaries. I currently work as an assistant producer/director with independent filmmakers while developing my own projects. The Birdman of Skomer is my directorial debut. As a researcher and assistant producer I was involved in the following productions for various channels and streamers: Attenborough’s Wonder of Song, My Tiger Family, Lift the Ice, Survival of the Beast, Europe - One Continent, Five World.
